Silkroad Ensemble
Heroes Take Their Stands
Conceived by Folklorist Ahmad Sadri
Music direction by Colin Jacobsen and Kayhan Kalhor
The “United Nations” of music, Silkroad Ensemble celebrates its 20th anniversary with an entirely new concert, conceived by folklorist Ahmad Sadri. Known for traditional instruments from dozens of global cultures, Silkroad’s newest collaboration steps into modern history with a composition by jazz pianist Jason Moran inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s address to the Holt Street Baptist Church in 1955. Since 1998, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Silkroad have undertaken a radical experiment in the face of globalization, elevating music alongside commerce as the bridge between peoples. In 2017, they collaborated with documentary filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick to create original music for the 18-hour series for PBS, The Vietnam War.
